Final stage of 20mph roll-out to go live
The blanket covering of 20mph speed limits in Bristol will finally be complete when the last zone goes live on Wednesday.
The new Outer South area, which includes Bishopsworth, Brislington West, Hartcliffe, Hengrove, Stockwood and Whitchurch Park, will mark the end of a year and a half project.
The eighth zone goes live just over a week after more than 8,000 people urged the mayor to reverse the scheme through a petition submitted to the council.
The policy, started by the previous Lib Dem administration and carried through by current mayor George Ferguson, has seen most residential streets converted to 20mph. Most 40mph and 50mph dual carriageways have remained the same.
Councillors debated the policy for the fourth time in a year at a meeting of full council on Tuesday last week where the petition was submitted.
The mayor argued it would be “unthinkable” to reverse the rules which he compared to the smoking ban.
Bristol’s 20mph scheme hit national headlines earlier this year after it was revealed that Ferguson had been caught speeding.
The total cost of implementing the scheme, including putting up 13,000 new signs, was revealed to be £2.3 million.
