Crowds gather for funeral of man who died hanging Union Jack from lamppost
Large crowds gathered at South Bristol Crematorium on Friday morning for the funeral of a man who died hanging a Union Jack flag on a lamppost.
Paul Lumber, aged 61, suffered fatal head injuries after falling from a ladder intoxicated near his home in Bedminster in November 2025.

The painter and decorator had attended a Bristol City football match before leaving to “put up some flags around the neighbourhood,” heard the Avon Coroner’s Court in a statement.

Members of the political group ‘Bristol Patriots’ lined the street outside the crematorium, waved St George’s and Union Jack flags and set off flares in a “guard of honour” as the funeral cars passed.

In a social media post, the group called for supporters to join the send-off, saying that it is what Paul “truly deserves”.
