Bristol Airport’s new ‘multi-faith area’ compared to smoking shelter

By Martin Booth  Thursday Nov 23, 2023

A new multi-faith area at Bristol Airport has become a figure of fun online.

The small structure in the airport’s free waiting zone has been compared to a smoking shelter and a bus stop by online commentators.

Bristol Airport say that the new area “provides customers with a private space to reflect and pray whilst waiting to collect friends, family or loved ones”.

Writing on their social media accounts, Bristol Airport said: “This week, we have opened a new multi-faith area in the free waiting zone.

“Located just off the Silver Zone roundabout, the new area provides customers with a private space to reflect and pray whilst waiting to collect friends, family or loved ones.

“We also have a Multi-Faith Quiet Area in the Departure Lounge situated between the Central Walkway and Gates 32-34 on the first floor.”

On Facebook, Phil Howells wrote: “Well done to Bristol Airport marketing team. You posts usually get a few likes and comments, but this one has hundreds and is likely to go viral and all for the cost of sticking a sign on a bus shelter. Perhaps next week, change the sign to big ‘T2’ and you can then announce that the airport has then got a second terminal.”

Nick Warren said: “Nothing says you care more than a wet floor and replacing the smoking sign with a multi faith one.”

Emma Avery added: “Bristol Airport, love the idea, but it needs to be a dry, secure, welcoming area – not a bus shelter!”

A Bristol Airport spokesperson told Bristol24/7 that they have “consulted widely and listened to feedback and designed a new specification for future spaces”.

The spokesperson said: “We’ve experienced an increase in customers requiring a multi faith area in this location.

“This newly created space was provided after consultation with users of the car park to provide immediate shelter and dignity prior to winter – it has been welcomed by the users.

“We also have a multi-faith quiet area in the Departure Lounge of the terminal (situated between the Central Walkway and Gates 32-34 on the first floor) and we are introducing other dedicated areas across the site.”
