Viandas Spanish deli opens on Park Row

By Martin Booth  Thursday Oct 16, 2014

Three friends from Spain have brought a taste of their home country to Bristol.

Viandas is a Spanish deli with the shelves packed full of items all imported from across the Iberian peninsula.

There are cakes from Cadiz, sausages from Salamanca and olives from Alicante.

It’s a long way from the owners’ former lives in Spain, where Manuel Perez owned a factory, Eduardo Garcia worked in IT and Barbara Belmar was a teacher.

“We chose to come to Bristol because it’s a very open-minded city, you love your food here and are always looking for something new,” explained Eduardo when Bristol24/7 visited the new shop this morning.

“British people love Spanish food but can’t always buy real Spanish food. And when they do, sometimes it can be expensive. That’s not fair.”

Like every good tapas bar, legs of ham hang from hooks here. The meat is then sliced and vaccum-packed or sold fresh from the fridge that makes up the counter of this former smoking paraphernalia shop.

Ever felt the need for a barbecue paella on the Downs? Well you can buy the kit for that here down to the matches and firelighters.

“We just love food,” said Manuel. “And we want to share our passion.”
