Pay-as-you-feel at Phoenix Cafe
There are loaves of bread, rolls and Welsh cakes on the counter at the Phoenix Cafe on All Saints Street.
No difference there to many other cafes in Bristol. Other than that here these items are available to buy on a pay as you feel basis.
Like at Skipchen within the Crofters Rights on Stokes Croft, this is food that would otherwise have gone to waste, with both businesses part of the Real Junk Food Project.
But waste food is not all that’s on offer here. On the day I visited, among the specials was super berry granola with either milk or vegan yoghurt, cream of mushroom soup with grain mustard, and caramelised onion apple and blue cheese grilled sandwich.
The bread, cakes and buns all cost as much as you feel they should.
My well-made flat white had been roasted by Extract Coffee in St Werburgh’s, with a choice of teas and a chai latte for £2.30.
The addition of three flavours of protein shakes is a clue to one of the other businesses who are based here in the Pithay Studios.
A personal training service is on offer upstairs alongside such diverse businesses such as home cleaning services and artists.
Hats, t-shirts, pottery and other assorted art on the walls here show the talent of some of the most creative people working on the floors above.
And on the ground floor, this cafe is where they can all come together as well as offering those still delicious baked goods that would otherwise have gone to landfill.
