Bristol food writer to judge best restaurants

A chef turned food writer from Bristol has been given what some may think is a dream job for someone who eats for a living.

Xanthe Clay is the new World’s 50 Best Restaurants academy chair for the UK & Ireland region.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

Clay, who lives in Redland, has a regular column in the Daily Telegraph and contributes to publications including Good Food magazine, Olive, Food & Travel and Delicious, as well as working with the BBC and being the current President of the Guild of Food Writers.

She began her career as a bookseller specialising in cookery books, before spending her redundancy money when that bookshop closed training as a chef at the Leiths School of Food and Wine.

Stints working in kitchens in Bath followed, before her column in the Telegraph began after she wrote a letter to the food editor.

Clay’s new role will begin by her selecting a voting panel of 36 chefs, restaurateurs, journalists and gourmets.

These voters, numbering more than 900 in total across the world, make up the World’s 50 Best Restaurants academy whose votes create the 50 best restaurants list.

The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2014 includes three entries from the UK, including two in the top-10:

1) Noma. Copenhagen, Denmark.

2) El Cellar de Can Roca. Girona, Spain.

3) Osteria Francescana. Modena, Italy.

4) Eleven Madison Park. New York, USA.

5) Dinner by Heston Blumenthal. London, UK.

6) Mugaritz. San Sebastian, Spain.

7) DOM. Sao Paulo, Brazil.

8) Arzak. San Sebastian, Spain.

9) Alinea. Chicago, USA.

10) The Ledbury. London, UK.
