Bristol newcomers Forgery Lit shake things up

By Laura Williams  Thursday Feb 12, 2015

How did Forgery Lit come about?

We started off as a four piece with Ami on guitar and vocals. After trying out a few drummers we decided to change things around and become a three piece with Ami on drums and vocals. It was challenging at the beginning but eventually it all fell into place and we enjoy this set up more. Now we are Ami, Niko and Joe.

What inspired the name?

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

Forgery Lit stands for Forgery Literature, which not many people know. The idea behind the name is that things are usually deceptively presented as true, when in fact they are imaginary. This goes back to ancient times when the content of scriptures was forged to fit certain interests, and that includes religion. Hence the name of our first EP Onomacritus which was the name of one of those forgers in ancient Greece.

What’s your favourite Bristol venue to play?

Bristol offers a great variety of good venues but we quite enjoy playing The Fleece.

You’ve collaborated with She Makes War, any other collaborations we should know about?

At the moment Ami has a side project with Chris Nicholls (Age Decay) and Hannah Layhe (Kalu Kalae) under the name ‘Oh the Guilt’

What are your plans this summer? Festival gigs?

After touring with She Makes War, supporting her on her spring tour,we plan to hop over to Europe. Summer plan is to play as many festivals that we can everywhere.

What would be your dream bill to play on?

Ermm…Elvis Presley! Ha!

Your singer is also the drummer – that’s unusual, what are the pros and cons of that?

We don’t really see any cons in that; apart from Ami getting all the girls… haha!

Are there any other bands with less than usual set ups you rate? Boredoms with a bunch of drummers for example?

Yes actually. There’s Little Hurricane who are a two piece with a female drummer/singer, Polica who has two drummers, a bassist and no guitarist, Ben Howard who pretty much does everything himself, and also Bristol’s own Hysterical Injury who use bass, drums and vocal effects in their own unique way.

What inspires your sound?

Well, if you asked us all that question individually you would have three very different answers!

Tell us something about you we won’t know…

We all share the same bathroom!

Forgery Lit support She Makes War at the Old Bookshop on March 12. More info on their Facebook page.
