Picks of the month – October

The Necks

After 25 years of making if up as they go, there’s still no sign that this remarkable improvising piano troupe from Australia are running out of ideas. Their method is to construct a multi-layered soundscape, where intricacy and repetitions reward the careful listener with an almost out of body experience. No two gigs are the same, of course, and devoted fans will travel far and wide to get a fix of the Necks’ ambient alchemy.

The Lantern

The Syd Lawrence Orchestra

Chris Dean leads the orchestra, showcasing their finely blended sound and conjuring memories of the glittering and glamorous days of the Big Band era; it’s a zesty new show fizzing and sparkling its way through a performance that is sure to be brimming with surprises. ‘Musical fireworks from the best band in the land’, according to the posters.

St George’s

Sage Francis

He’s been off the scene for a while, but that doesn’t mean he’s been resting on his laurels – the ever-brilliant Sage Francis is back at The Fleece and will be performing material from his recently-released album Copper Gone. More of a poet than a musician per se, his lyrics are incredible and he paved the way for a today’s wave of indie-hop.

The Fleece

George Ezra

Bristol’s biggest musical export at the moment, George Ezra, returns for his largest hometown show to-date as part of a UK tour. You might have seen him on the front of magazines, heard him in Radio One’s Live Lounge covering Cyndi Lauper or perusing the music at Rise on the Triangle. A former regular on the local open mic circuit, including a residency at The Gallimaufry, he’s now signed to a major label and being touted as the next Ed Sheeran.

O2 Academy

Hookworks

In support of their new album release, The Hum (Nov 10), Hookworms return to Bristol to play an intimate gig at Start The Bus. They’ve enjoyed a lot of airplay and played a bunch of awesome festival sets this summer (Off in Poland, End of the Road in Dorset etc) and have proven themselves as a great live act – merging psychedelic undertones with walls of noise to create deep and enticing sounds to get lost in.
