Ground-breaking Mongolian film opens in Bristol

Award-winning writer/director Zoljargal Purevdash made history with her debut full-length film If Only I Could Hibernate when it became the first Mongolian feature to be shown as an official selection at the Cannes Film Festival last year. This week, her lauded drama receives its south west regional premiere in Bristol, coinciding with its first screenings anywhere in the UK.

If Only I Could Hibernate tells the story of poor but gifted Ulaanbaatar teenager Ulzii who’s determined to win a national physics competition that will lift his family out of poverty. When his illiterate, widowed mother finds work in the countryside, Ulzii is left in charge of his younger siblings with no money for food or to heat the family’s yurt during the cold winter months. But if he takes paid work, he stands no chance of realising his dream.
