Dates announced for 2024 Cary Grant festival

By Robin Askew  Monday Jul 8, 2024

It’s a big birthday year for Bristol’s very own Archibald Leach, who was born in Horfield and became global superstar Cary Grant. Cary died in 1986 at the age of 82. But had he lived, our hero would have recently turned 120.

The biennial Cary Comes Home festival is planning to celebrate with a focus on how Archie’s early years as an acrobat influenced his screen performances and those of his co-stars. “Grant is usually best remembered for his style and charm but he started out doing circus tricks with a travelling vaudeville troupe and never lost the ability, or willingness, to pull off risky stunts or teach other actors, including Katharine Hepburn, to tackle them too,” says founder/director Charlotte Crofts.

It’s just been revealed that this sixth edition will run from November 29 to December 1. The full line-up won’t be available for a few months yet, but it will include films showcasing Cary’s athleticism and the lifelong inspiration he drew from watching action-adventure and slapstick comedy films during his Bristol boyhood, alongside talks, walks and events featuring current day circus performers.
