Bristol’s week in film: July 23-29 2021

The weather forecast suggests a rather dramatic change will soon be with us. Best scurry into the nearest cinema for shelter. Fortunately, there’s plenty to see.

This week’s big new release is M. Night Shyamalan’s latest supernatural horror Old. Alternative choices include arthouse vengeance thriller Riders of Justice and period lesbian romance The World to Come.

The splendid annual Cinema Rediscovered kicks off on Wednesday and includes two screenings in the very welcome 1971: The Year Hollwood Went Independent strand: Klute and The Last Picture Show.

It’s also a bumper week for filmmaker Q&As. Edgar Wright will be beamed to multiple cinemas to talk about his eagerly anticipated documentary The Sparks Brothers, Ben Sharrock is at the Watershed with a preview of his critically acclaimed Limbo, and over at the Cube local filmmaker Patch de Salis discusses his new Bristol homelessness documentary This Ain’t Living.
