A treat for anyone who couldn’t get enough of Portrait of a Lady on Fire and Ammonite, Norwegian filmmaker Mona Fastvold‘s mannered frontier lesbian romance stars Katherine Waterston and Vanessa Kirby as 19th century farmers’ wives seeking respite from drudgery and their respective hubbies.

You know pretty much where this is going from the outset, but it’s very well crafted with empathetic performances. Fascinating trivia fact: those beautiful period upstate New York landscapes were shot in, er, Romania.
