Two-Lane Blacktop

Director
Monte Hellman
Certificate

Running Time
102 mins

Smoothie-chops singer/songwriter James Taylor (driver) and doomed Beach Boy Dennis Wilson (mechanic) hit the road across the American Southwest in their souped-up 1955 Chevrolet on a race with GTO Pontiac-driving old-timer Warren Oates in Monte Hellman‘s critically rehabilitated existential road movie. You’d have thought the slight, meandering story might have appealed to the Easy Rider generation, but the film was a box office flop on release back in 1971.

Its 50th anniversary return to the screen is part of Cinema Rediscovered.
