Bristol Film Festival announces Clifton Summer Screenings event

By Robin Askew  Thursday May 30, 2024

Following a successful launch last summer, Bristol Film Festival returns to the Mall Gardens in Clifton for a second series of Summer Screenings from July 4-7. The Festival aims to offer a fully immersive experience, with covered seating, state-of-the-art LED screens and wireless headphones – which means screenings can go ahead regardless of the vicissitudes of the summer weather.

The programme ranges from family favourites (Mary Poppins, The Land Before Time, Madagascar, Up) to late night horror (The Blair Witch Project, The Wicker Man, The Evil Dead, Friday the 13th) via blockbuster hits (Barbie, Jurassic Park, Pirates of the Caribbean; The Curse of the Black Pearl, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom), plus al fresco cinema staple romcoms (Notting Hill, Four Weddings and a Funeral) and singalong musicals (Mamma Mia!, Saturday Night Fever).

This year, the event adds a second screen, hosting talks, short films, cult movies and the festival’s trademark Vintage Screenings (comprising a film and wine tasting). The shorts include Bristol & Flight on Film, Blitz on Bristol (from Bristol Archives) and Abba vs Queen from Bristol’s Stanza Media, which aims to reveal which band was bigger and better (Queen, obviously). Other films with local links include Starter for 10, which is set at Bristol University, and Golden Years – the locally made comedy about pensioners who pull off a heist. Talks include Cary Grant at 120 and a session centred on wildlife filmmaking.

The event’s headline sponsor is Porsche Centre Bristol, with some of the screenings taking place in the Porsche Pavilion. The Ivy Clifton Brasserie will be hosting The Garden Bar, serving up bespoke cocktails that can be pre-ordered for each screening. Bristol Film Festival have also partnered with English Wine Producer Lyme Bay Winery, who will be running several tastings for guests over the course of the event, and The Mall Deli will be offering some tasty treats.
