Bristol Beacon stages a live performance of the spooky Arcadia at St. George’s

BAFTA-winning filmmaker Paul Wright’s spooky archive cine-essay Arcadia has certainly inspired some imaginative events. Back in 2018, the Encounters festival teamed up with Compass Presents for an immersive screening in the Boiling Wells Amphitheatre in the wilds of St. Werburghs.

Now Bristol Beacon is bringing guitarist Adrian Utley (Portishead) and keyboard player Will Gregory (Goldfrapp) to St. George’s for a performance of their specially commissioned score in what’s billed as “a four-dimensional insight into the beauty and brutality of rural Britain.”

Arcadia: eye-opening and more than a little creepy

For the uninitiated, Arcadia draws on 100 years of archive footage to explore our changing, occasionally dark relationship with the land. It takes us from folk carnivals and fetes to masked parades, water divining and harvesting as it gets all hauntingly Wicker Man on our asses.

Rural weirdness in Arcadia

For their live performance accompanying the screening on November 11, Utley and Gregory have assembled a nine-piece band that includes veteran folk singer Marry Waterson. Go here for tickets and further information.
