Appropriately, a horror film topped the chart on both sides of the Atlantic at the start of Halloween month. A supernatural spooker in the tradition of It Follows and the Ring series, with Kevin Bacon’s daughter Sosie in the lead role, Smile springs no surprises but has garnered generally positive reviews. Don’t Worry Darling held firm in second place, relegating the Clooney/Roberts romcom Ticket to Paradise to number three. Period feelgood comedy-drama Mrs Harris Goes to Paris also made the top five as did Tamil-languge action epic Ponniyin Selvan: I. In sixth place, the Avatar reissue is well on its way to taking a quarter of a million quid, which bodes well for the commercial prospects of the upcoming sequel. Outside the top ten, NT Live’s Prima Facie has now grossed more than £5m, becoming the most successful event cinema release of all time.
