It’s one of those weeks when there’s really just the one story, as a giant summer blockbuster juggernaut accounts for the vast majority of box office takings, forcing all the other films on release to shuffle down a place. Like many Marvel superheroes, Doctor Strange’s powers appear to include a teflon-coated defence against mixed reviews. To give some idea of just how gargantuan The Multiverse of Madness has already become, it took the same amount of loot in four days as Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore managed in five weeks. It’s also already exceeded the total hauled in by the first Doctor Strange flick back in 2016 and ranks as the fourth-biggest opener in Marvel history. The only other film to take more than £1m over the weekend was the Downton Abbey sequel. But the appeal of Julian Fellowes’ toff porn appears to be wearing off, as A New Era has taken half as much as the first film managed in the equivalent period.
