What’s likely to be the last box office chart for some time makes grim reading for the cinema exhibition industry. Revenue plummeted by 50% across the board over the weekend, which means operators will need little further encouragement to shut their doors this week as the new government advice kicks in. No point staying open when takings are less than overheads, after all. Many chains have already announced closures, and the others are expected to fall into line soon. All of which means the figures above must be approached with caution, especially as Pixar’s Onward was the only film to take more than £1m. The highest new entry, the Trump-baiting The Hunt, managed little more than half that. And spare a thought for Bristolian director Philippa Lowthorpe, whose feminist drama Misbehaviour had the misfortune to be released on a weekend when everybody decided to stay at home.
