It took just a couple of weeks for Top Gun: Maverick to overtake War of the Worlds to become Tom Cruise’s biggest hit at the UK box office. With another £10m in the kitty at the weekend, it’s closing on the £40m mark that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness took five weeks to reach. Alex Garland’s horror flick Men was the only big new release brave enough to go head-to-head with the stunt-crazy Scientologist and did well enough to grab third place. Also enjoying a boost because of half-term (and possibly benefiting from sickbag-clutching punters fleeing relentless unctuous TV coverage of the jubbly), Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and The Bad Guys each climbed a couple of places. By contrast, Disney’s rival family flick, The Bob’s Burger’s Movie, seems to be struggling to find its audience as it dropped to ninth place.
