Chart copyright Comscore

Elvis got the chart all shook up, as Baz Luhrmann’s biopic grabbed the top spot with £4m tucked into its blue suede shoes. That’s behind Rocketman‘s £5.3m and Bohemian Rhapsody‘s £9.5m, but is still a very strong post-pandemic opening and underlines the continued popularity of rock biopics. The King bumped those dinosaurs into second place, where they’ll struggle to match the earnings of the previous two Jurassic World flicks. By contrast, Top Gun: Maverick just keeps on soaring and has now overtaken all three of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films to secure 22nd place in the UK all-time chart. The Bond flick Casino Royale is next in its sights. With Universal horror The Black Phone creeping in to fifth place, this week’s chart also sees a wider spread of releases appealing to the cinemagoing public, with each of the top five taking more than £1m. But there was comparatively little interest in the next five.
