Conventional wisdom would have it that when the sun comes out punters flock to the beach rather than the cinema. But the lure of Taika Waititi’s follow-up to his much-praised Thor: Ragnarok proved great enough to ensure that Love and Thunder enjoyed an even bigger opening weekend. Chris Hemsworth’s hammer-wielder played whack-a-Minion at the top of the chart, grabbing £12.3m (including previews) and putting the fourth Thor film well ahead of Ragnarok‘s £7.3m. It’s by no means a record breaker for Marvel, though. And while this week’s top four all did well to take more than £1m apiece in the heat, they all suffered significant hits. Nonetheless, Top Gun: Maverick reached the £70m mark, overtaking Mamma Mia! to grab 15th place in the UK all-time chart. It’s got another £6m to go to reach the top ten. Among blockbuster naysayers, idiosyncratic Brit robot comedy Brian and Charles is the arthouse hit of the moment. And it’s great to see that 4K remastered classic sixties Dr. Who double bill of Dr. Who and the Daleks and Daleks Invasion Earth 2150AD, each with Peter Cushing as the timelord, sneaking in at the foot of the chart.
