Cinema enjoyed a bit of a post-heatwave bounceback this week with each of the top five films taking more than £1m. Coming-of-age thriller Where the Crawdads Sing was the highest new entry in third place, but secured a place in the record books for having the widest release of any film directed by a woman. Minions: The Rise of Gru enjoyed a 16% school holidays boost to narrowly retake the top spot from Thor: Love and Thunder. Elvis is also holding up well, as is Top Gun: Maverick, which now has just over £6m to go to overtake Titanic and bag a place in the UK all-time top ten. Event cinema is back with a bang too. NT Live’s broadcast of Suzie Miller’s award-winning Prima Facie, in which Killing Eve star Jodie Comer makes her West End debut, swiftly scooped up nearly half-a-million quid to become the biggest post-lockdown event cinema hit.
