Sonic the Hedgehog topped the chart, but who cares? The big story, once again, is the Oscar winning Parasite, which recorded a 133% increase in earnings and climbed to second place on the chart. This means that in just two weeks Bong Joon-ho’s brilliant satire has overtaken Amelie to become the all-time third-biggest foreign language hit at the UK box office. The film’s release is being expanded for a second time this weekend to a blockbuster-sized 550 screens, which means it could yet beat Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and The Passion of the Christ. Birds of Prey, meanwhile, had its wings clipped. It plummeted from second to fifth place, marking a low point for the ‘DC Extended Universe’. Opening at number six, Emma is doing reasonable business but has clearly been overshadowed by Parasite in the battle for the chattering class pound.
