An arthouse demonic possession psychological horror/thriller with the increasingly ubiquitous Morfydd Clark? Count us in. Of course, as that word ‘arthouse’ will have alerted you, there’s plenty of ambiguity here, which means that gorehounds of the knucklehead persuasion may find themselves frustrated by the film’s refusal to stick to genre conventions.
In Rose Glass‘s striking feature debut, Clark plays devout recent Catholic convert Maud: a hospice nurse who becomes increasingly convinced that her cancer-ridden, former dancer patient Amanda (Jennifer Ehle) has become possessed by an ‘orrible demon. It doesn’t help that she’s plagued by gory visions and has all kinds of trauma buried in her past. Impressed reviewers have drawn comparisons with the likes of Carrie, The Exorcist, Under the Skin and Repulsion, which places Saint Maud in pretty illustrious company.
