There was an awful lot riding on this for Pixar. Widely agreed to be the best film in the series, 2010’s Toy Story 3 was nominated for both the Best Animated Feature (which it won) and Best Picture Academy Awards and became the first animated film to take more than £1 billion at the global box office. Following that has clearly been something of a challenge. Release dates came and went (Toy Story 4 was originally due out in June 2017), creator John Lasseter departed, and the script was reworked several times. Eventually it turned up, marking the directorial debut of Inside Out co-writer Josh Cooley. Pixar needn’t have worried, mind: Toy Story 4 took even more than $1 billion at the box office, becoming the most successful film in the franchise and winning the Best Animated Feature Oscar.
All the old crew are back for a tale that reintroduces Bo Peep (Annie Potts), who was absent from Toy Story 3, as a love interest for Tom Hanks‘s Woody. There’s also a new character in the form of Forky (Tony Hale). Fashioned by the gang’s new owner Bonnie, he’s a “sentient spork” who suffers an existential crisis about being a toy.
It’s back as part of the Parking Lot Social‘s run of post-Christmas drive-in screenings at Bristol Airport. Go here for tickets and further information.
