Struggling single mother and former Miss Juneteenth pageant queen Turquoise Jones (Nicole Beharie) is eager to persuade her rebellious 15-year-old daughter Kai (Alexis Chikaeze) to take part in the annual contest, which forms part of the Texan celebration of the 1865 emancipation from slavery. Equally important is the college scholarship that goes with the crown.
Wrier/director Channing Godfrey Peoples‘ widely praised directorial debut was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. “Peoples understands the rhythms and the resilience of this community, clearly relishing the blend of grit and beauty that lies at the heart of her film,” noted Mark Kermode. “There are struggles still to be faced, but the message of Peoples’s film is one of love, hope and change.”
