You’d have thought that director Sofia Coppola getting back together with her Lost in Translation star Bill Murray for a father-daughter caper comedy would be big news. But far from getting a major release, On the Rocks is being sneaked into just a handful of cinemas. How come? Well, this is yet another of those films commissioned by a deep-pocketed digital streaming company. So if you’re not quick enough to catch it on the big screen, you’ll need a subscription to Apple TV+.
The story has New Yorker Laura (Rashida Jones) getting suspicious about what hubby Dean (Marlon Wayans) is up to when he’s “working late at the office”. So she turns to her ageing playboy dad Felix (Murray) for assistance in finding out the truth. Their comic odyssey soon becomes a full-blown caper. Murray’s on marvellously deadpan form and the reviews have been mostly enthusiastic. “On the Rocks is very much a father-daughter two-hander — tender and personal, dryly funny and played to perfection by Jones and Murray,” enthused The Hollywood Reporter. “Its effortless touch shows the accomplished, genre-hopping Coppola continuing to expand her range.”
