Hundreds of new homes proposed in car-free development
The first planning application has been submitted for a key regeneration area in south Bristol.
Bristol City Council and WECA hope to transform the land around Whitehouse Street in Bedminster “from a brownfield industrial estate into a thriving mixed neighbourhood of homes, jobs, and better community, cultural and public spaces”.
There could be around 2,000 new homes, with the first development proposal including 437 new homes of which 87 are set to be affordable.
The mixed-use car-free scheme also includes new open spaces, ground floor commercial units and purpose-built student accommodation.

A spokesperson for developers Apsley House Capital and Galliard Homes said: “Two of the key aims of the Whitehouse Street regeneration are providing opportunities for new jobs and creating better community spaces.
“Our proposal includes 12,700 square feet of ground floor spaces – divided into approximately 20 units – spread across the site exactly for these purposes. These spaces will help activate the area and create a vibrant place.
“Currently there is no public access into or through the site, and little if any biodiversity.
“We propose to transform and open up the site with extensive planting and a number of open, landscaped spaces for everyone.”
