Jazz pick of the week: March 9-15
After the helter-skelter of all that festival frenzy it’s good to have a more measured week in prospect. As ever, however, there’s bit of a pile-up on Thursday evening forcing a choice between enticing visitors: hip pianist Dominic Marshall’s free-flowing trio’s return to Future Inns (Thursday 12) follows an impressive debut earlier this year, while Nat Birchall’s Coltrane-influenced tenor sax leads a quintet including brilliant vibes player Corey Mwamba at St George’s.
Happily neither gig clashes with ace bass player (and recent Bristol scene arrival) Vicky Tilson whose VTQ quartet will be playing an earlier set in the Colston Hall Foyer featuring self-penned music from her new F-IRE label CD. There’s more contemporary music at the Bebop from Sefrial (Friday 13), saxophonist Sophie Stockham’s ace quintet exploring the likes of John Zorn, Medeski/Martin/Wood.
Tuesday’s Fringe@The Mall session features the popular pairing of violinist John Pearce and Dave Newton on piano (Tuesday 11), both lyrical players in fine form, while fans of vocal jazz can catch Victoria Klewin at Canteen on the same night.
Gig pick: Nat Birchall Quintet (St George’s, Thursday 12) While often seen as a foil to ultra-hipster Matthew Halsall saxophonist Nat Birchall has an eloquent jazz message of his own to deliver and this five some (featuring Corey Mwamba’s dazzling vibraphone) does him proud.
