Bye bye to St Bon’s as a music venue

By Martin Booth  Wednesday Sep 10, 2014

Tomorrow sees the last gig at a small Bishopston social club which over the last decade has played host to countless musicians from across America.

Hans Chew will play the last gig in St Bonaventure’s after 12 glorious years, before most gigs promoted by CRH Music get moved to The Tunnels while they look for a new permanent venue.

“The reasons behind the venue’s closure are many, complex and not a little tedious, so I won’t dwell on them,” said Tim Martin from CRH.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

“There may be an option to go back there (to St Bonaventure’s) at some point in the future, but the chances of that happening are, at best, remote.

“Over the last 12 years some of the best shows performed in the United Kingdom by some of Americana’s leading artists have taken place in a small and otherwise nondescript social club in north Bristol.

“It will be missed, and I’d like to take this opportunity to thanks everyone, artists and audience, who have made it possible, and have helped to create a truly fabulous venue with an international reputation from such an unlikely base.”

Martin paid special tributes to Stuart Amesbury, “without doubt the best soundman in the South West”, and wife Cherie, “who does virtually everything”.
