Ryan Reynolds refused to be scared off by Candyman as Free Guy notched up a £10m tally in its three weeks at the top. Still, Candyman director Nia DeCosta won’t be too concerned as the positions were revered in the US, allowing her to set a record by becoming the first black female filmmaker to score a number one hit. The only other new release to make the top ten was Dutch violinist Andre Rieu’s 2021 Summer Concert: Together Again, which bagged fourth place – demonstrating that the mature audience is not being put off returning to cinemas. Last week’s openers fared rather less well. People Just Do Nothing: Big in Japan took a big tumble to seventh place, suggesting that this one didn’t appeal much beyond the fanbase of the TV series. G.I. Joe Origins: Snake Eyes performed even more poorly, falling out of the top ten after just one week.
