Given the box office success of Edgar Wright’s The Sparks Brothers, Ron and Russell Mael are certainly the seventies duo of the moment. So what better time to release their eccentric romantic rock opera, which was unveiled at Cannes 2021 and also marks French Holy Motors director Leos Carax‘s English-langauge debut?
The story follows a stand-up comedian (Adam Driver) and his opera singer wife (Marion Cotillard), whose lives change dramatically after the birth of thier first child. The Rotten Tomatoes consensus is: “A dreamy, delicate dance between farce and fantasia, Annette is a magnificently ludicrous rock opera whose experimental approach to its emotional extremes is an ambitious, if not peculiar, return for director Leos Carax.”
