By grounding the story of the Dark Knight’s origins in a gritty social and psychological realism, director Christopher Nolan and co-writer Davis S Goyer kicked off this superlative trilogy with a visually stunning, thematically compelling movie.
Convinced that his childhood bat phobia contributed to his parents’ deaths, Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) learns to face his fears and master his vengeful violence at the remote temple fortress run by Ducard (Liam Neeson), Ra’s al Ghul (Ken Watanabe) and the mysterious League of Shadows. Back in Gotham, Bruce gradually creates his theatrical alter ego, The Bat Man, with the help of Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman), and takes on gangster Carmine Falcone (Tom Wilkinson) and The Scarecrow (Cillian Murphy), who uses powdered toxins to expose his victims’ deepest inner fears. Although imagined on a grand scale, this always operates on a human level.
