These days, the cinema industry targets mature punters with the same degree of ruthlessness it uses to lure teens. The kids get comicbook and computer game adaptations, while pensioners are served gentle, lightweight feelgood comedies perfectly suited to a gentle afternoon nap during matinee screenings.
In this one, a slimline Timothy Spall sets out on an epic journey to carry his late wife’s ashes from John O’Groats to Lands End, where the couple originally met. Does he take the train, hitch a ride or even fly to his destination? He does not. Instead, the old boy uses his free bus pass to wend his way south, relying on the kindness of strangers to help him reach his destination.
