Alas, this isn’t a biopic of the fictional band in Almost Famous. The titular Stillwater here is Stillwater, Oklahoma, from whence oil worker Matt Damon travels to France, where his estranged daughter Abigail Breslin has been arrested and charged with murdering her friend. In attempting to clear her name, he has to deal with an unfamiliar legal system.
The Station Agent and Spotlight director Tom McCarthy‘s drama has been denounced by Amanda Knox, on whose experiences it is very loosely based. Whether this matters to you will rather depend on your opinion of Ms. Knox. Critical opinion has been divided. “From one vantage point, Stillwater may just be a sentimental and lurid riff on the infamous Amanda Knox case,” noted Vanity Fair‘s reviewer. “But I think McCarthy has something bigger in mind, which he pokes at intriguingly throughout his movie’s considerable sprawl.”
