Outwardly, Souad (Bassant Ahmed) is an obedient, god-fearin’ teenager living in religiously conservative Zagazig, north of Cairo. But via her mobile phone, she leads a clandestine double life with a virtual boyfriend in cosmopolitan Alexandria. A twist in the tale leads to the focus shifting to Souad’s younger sister Rabab (Basmala Elghaiesh), who embarks on a journey to uncover her sibling’s secrets.
Ayten Amin’s second feature has been well received by critics on the festival circuit. “The film is remarkable not just for its razor-sharp, nonjudgmental insight… but also for the nuanced performances making each character rounded yet ultimately unknowable,” was Variety‘s verdict.
