Ammonite

Director
Francis Lee
Certificate
15
Running Time
136 mins

Pioneering palaeontologist Mary Anning (Kate Winslet) enjoys forbidden love with married geologist Charlotte Murchison (Saoirse Ronan) in 1840s Lyme Regis in actor-turned-director Francis Lee’s follow up to his much-acclaimed, multiple award-winning gay drama God’s Own Country (“the Yorkshire Dales’ answer to Brokeback Mountain, if you will).

A lightly fictionalised biopic anchored by a brace of powerhouse perfomances, Ammonite combines intimate lesbian romance with a subtle exploration of sexism in Victorian science (Anning’s finds were frequently snaffled by whiskery men who declined her admission to their exclusive clubs).
