Adapted from Alan Warner‘s novel The Sopranos (not that one), Our Ladies follows a group of Scottish Catholic schoolgirls on a day trip to Edinburgh to perform in a choir competition in the 1990s, though they’re actually more interested in drinking and partying.
Scottish director Michael Caton-Jones’s comedy-drama was premiered at the BFI London Film Festival way back in 2019. Its UK cinema release has been delayed multiple times thanks to Covid-19. But it seems to have been worth the wait, garnering some rave reviews. It’s “a must-see riot of girl power and teen spirit that redefines how girls get to have sex and talk about sexuality on screen” according to Sight & Sound, while The Times remarked: “It features five of the most compelling, neatly drawn and slightly terrifying female protagonists committed to film.”
