Fighting food hardship in south Bristol

By Betty Woolerton  Friday Apr 22, 2022

A social enterprise that fights food hardship in deprived portions of Bristol is asking for support to continue their work over the next year.

Heart of BS13 was founded in 1900 by local residents in Hartcliffe wanting to address health problems by connecting with the local environment.

Since the pandemic ensued, the organisation has worked to ensure that residents could access free, pre-cooked meals that would take the pressure off the strain of lockdown. Over 18 months, Heart of BS13 supported over 400 households with 40,000 meals.

Now, campaigners are hoping to raise money to continue their fight against food insecurity.

Heart of BS13’s crowdfunding target is £10,000 and, once secured, will see support lent to 300 households over the next year.

About the fundraiser, the organisation wrote: “We believe that no-one should have to panic because they can’t afford to feed themselves and their family.  In the wake of the pandemic we face a cost of living crisis that is unprecedented in modern times and it’s hitting disadvantaged communities like BS13 hard.

“If you share our vision of improving food equity through social enterprise then please help us by making a direct donation or pledge for a selection of our delicious meals.”

Reaching the target will pay for staff time, ingredients and utility costs – striving to help the one in six BS13 households that experience financial precarity.
