A gold-wrapped Clifton Suspension Bridge
How’s this for a celebration of 150 years of the Clifton Suspension Bridge?
Bristol artist Luke Jerram, who brought the water slide to Park Street in May, has proposed to wrap the two towers of the bridge in gold – 2,000 square metres of weather resistant metallic fabric to be exact.
The project would cost £20,000 and could be carried out to coincide with planned renovation of the bridge next year.
As well as looking spectacular, it also references Brunel’s original Egyptian-influenced design for the structure, which would have had two sphinxes atop each tower (see the second photo in the gallery above).
In 2015, Jerram will be responsible for a flotilla of abandoned fishing boats appearing in Leigh Woods as part of Bristol’s year as European Green Capital.
