Gurt Lush Choir round the world in 300 voices

By Laura Williams  Monday Jan 12, 2015

Colston Hall will host an evening of a cappella delights presented by the ever-popular Gurt Lush Choir. Special guests this time are eight-time British Barbershop Champions, The Great Western Chorus of Bristol.

Expect a fine selection of fantastic popular songs from the last century, sacred songs, spirituals and stonking show-stoppers from the great musicals – all accompanied by exquisite choreography.

By contrast ‘the Lush’ offer the sound of African, Bulgarian, Scandinavian and English folk music, plus some rousing Renaissance secular songs and selected film soundtrack choices from legends such as Ennio Morricone and John Williams. Come, all ye who love singing, and bathe in the harmony of 300 voices!

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

Gurt Lush Choir is famed for its extreme a cappella repertoire, tackling diverse and challenging music from every corner of the musical spectrum. They are proud to perform regularly to sell-out crowds at The Colston Hall with collaborators such as Bristol Schools Philharmonia, The Gasworks Choir, Opera Anywhere, People of Note, The Gypsy Stars… They also regularly indulge in street busking, carol singing and other informal charitable activities.

The choir was founded by Sam Burns in October 2009. Within two years it grew to over 300 members, and is now one of the largest choirs in the country. Rehearsals are spilt between four branches, all of which rehearse every week, so each branch is nonetheless of ‘intimate’ size.

The Great Western Chorus of Bristol – one of the country’s premier choruses, eight-time British Barbershop chorus champions and 2014 national silver medallists – continues to entertain audiences with professional quality performances of close harmony singing and stunning choreography.

Under the skilled direction of Linda Corcoran, the audience are taken on a musical journey from Bach to Barbershop, with a repertoire that weaves both humour and intensity. Songs include the swing classic ‘You Make Me Feel So Young’ (made famous by Frank Sinatra), Van Morrison’s fabulous ‘Moondance’ (recently covered by Michael Bublé) and an original medley from The Phantom of the Opera arranged especially for the Chorus by one of their own, Simon Arnott.

A retiring collection will be held in aid of St Peter’s Hospice.

See the Gurt Lush Choir perform live at Colston Hall on Feb 7. More information and tickets available at: www.gurtlushchoir.com
