Bristol’s week in film: July 9-15 2021

Great news for anyone who’s craving an escape from the Bloody Football: there’s no shortage of big screen action this week.

Black Widow is the big new release. But if you fancy an, um, unusual Saturday night out, the Cinema De Lux has a screening of the Chinese Communist Party propaganda epic 1921.

Queer Vision continues this week, with highlights including the great Muriel’s Wedding screened outdoors at the Trinity Centre. There’s more al fresco fun over in Clevedon with the big Seaside Cinema weekend.

The Watershed has a couple of restored silent Italian classics, including the epic Cabiria from 1914, which serves up piracy, sea battles and human sacrifice – all with live piano accompaniment. What more could you ask for?

On the reissues front, Trainspotting, West Side Story and Fargo continue their anniversary runs and are joined by several FilmFour productions, including My Beautiful Laundrette, Brassed Off and the magnificent feast of violence and swearing that is Sexy Beast.

And – hurrah! – the Cube cinema reopens with screenings of the IDLES documenatry Don’t Go Gentle.
