Stephen Johnson Insight
Haydn Trio in G minor Hob.XV:19
Beethoven Trio in D op.70 no. 1 ‘Ghost’
To complement St Petersburg Symphony’s concert, English Piano Trio presents a programme that mirrors the sources of inspiration drawn on by Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky. Prokofiev was profoundly influenced by Haydn in the composition of his ‘Classical’ Symphony. Like Tchaikovsky, Beethoven drew on his admiration for Shakespeare, taking the witches’ scene from Macbeth as inspiration for the slow movement of the ‘Ghost’ piano trio.
English Piano Trio has been delighting audiences for over twenty years with their interpretation of the classical repertory, in the UK and abroad. The Trio also promotes contemporary music through commissioning, performing and recording new works. They perform regularly at major London venues such as South Bank’s Queen Elizabeth Hall and Purcell Room as well as touring extensively abroad.
Stephen Johnson has broadcast frequently for BBC Radio 3, 4 and World Service, major projects including 14 programmes about the music of Bruckner for the centenary of the composer’s death and has written regularly for The Independent, The Guardian, BBC Music Magazine and Gramophone.
