The Beguiled

Sofia Coppola
Running Time
94 mins

First filmed in 1971 by Don Siegel as a vehicle for regular collaborator Clint Eastwood, this adaptation of Thomas P. Cullinan‘s southern gothic novel A Painted Devil is helmed by Sofia Coppola, who became the second woman (and the first American woman) to bag the Best Director award at Cannes.

Despite the woozy Virgin Suicides-style arty pretensions and inevitable female empowerment twist, it remains a pulpy potboiler. A scheming injured Union solider (Colin Farrell) is taken in and nursed back to health by the repressed inmates of a “seminary for young ladies” run by Nicole Kidman, who work themselves into quite a lather over the presence of this macho stranger in their midst. Among them are Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning.
