Horror: Personal Shopper
Robin Askew, February 19, 2017
Personal Shopper reunites Kristen Stewart with Clouds of Sils Maria director Olivier Assayas, who shared the Best Director gong at Cannes 2016 with Cristian Mungiu. Once again, she’s cast as a personal assistant to a demanding celeb (Nora Von Waltstatten).
Fortunately, our Kristen has a jolly sideline as a medium and likes to hang out in the decaying Parisian mansion where she grew up with her twin brother. They’d always agreed that whoever carked it first would contact the other from Beyond the Grave. He perished in childhood from a congenital heart condition and now appears to be attempting to get in touch via the new-fangled medium of text messaging. Reviews of this unconventional supernatural thriller have been mixed. Among the film’s cheerleaders is The Grauniad, whose critic described it as “uncategorisable yet undeniably terrifying.”
