It’s June, 1944. Twenty-four hours before D-Day, Winston Churchill (Brian Cox) plans the biggest invasion in history, but fears that if he fucks up history will remember him as the architect of carnage. Oh dear – let’s hope it turns out well for him, eh? Among the supporting cast of this ticking-clock thriller are Miranda Richardson as Mrs Churchill, Mad Men‘s John Slattery as Dwight D. Eisenhower, and James Purefoy as King George VI.
Churchill scholars have been up in arms about alleged inaccuracies in this one, and have been offering to fight the filmmakers on the beaches. But if you can’t get enough of these wartime dramas, Joe Wright’s Darkest Hour, with Gary Oldman as Winnie, will be along in November.
