Mayor mocked on Top Gear
“I think, ladies and gentlemen, you’re going to enjoy this,” said Jeremy Clarkson, before informing millions of viewers across the world about Bristol mayor George Ferguson being caught speeding.
“He announced fairly recently that he was going to allocate £2.3 million of public money which will be spent on 13,000 signs saying that there will be a 20mph speed limit across the whole of Bristol.
“This is the mayor. He’s just been caught speeding.”
Cue much hilarity from Clarkson, his fellow presenters Richard Hammond and James May, and the studio audience.
Clarkson added: “He actually said afterwards he commends Avon and Somerset police for being so vigilant in catching him. I bet he didn’t say that when the letter came through the post box.”
Ferguson was caught driving at 35mph on the Portway by a mobile speed camera in January.
“More mockery of Bristol courtesy of the mayor,” tweeted Lib Dem councillor Christian Martin on Sunday night after the programme was broadcast.
Not afraid to be self-deprecating, Ferguson tweeted a photograph of his electric car being charged outside the Tobacco Factory, adding: “Written my application to be the next #Stig @The_Stig @BBC_TopGear @JeremyClarkson but maybe 35mph will not impress?”
