Vicar John Suddards death: Memorial garden fundraising begins: Parishioners of a church in South Gloucestershire have begun fundraising for a garden in memory of their former vicar, who was found stabbed to death. The Reverend John Suddards, 59, was found dead with stab wounds at his vicarage in Thornbury in February. The garden will be located at St Paul’s, The Hackett, in the town. More from BBC News…

Clevedon community hospital plans scrapped: Plans for a new community hospital in a North Somerset town have been scrapped. The existing hospital in Clevedon, which opened in 1874, was due to be replaced by a £15m facility. A review of the business case by NHS North Somerset and NHS South of England concluded that the proposals were “unaffordable”. Dentist volunteer quits Games over shifts: A dentist has pulled out of volunteering for London 2012 because of the hours she was asked to work. Kathryn Smith, from Chipping Sodbury, South Gloucestershire, was due to be one of the dentists based in the Athletes’ Village. She changed her mind after learning her rota included working until 11.30pm, followed by a shift starting at 6.30am. ‘It was worth being hit by a golf ball at Open’: A teenage  golfer from Chipping Sodbury had more excitement and drama than he ever imagined at the Open Championship. Jason Blue, 16, and team-mate Ross Furnival, went up to Royal Lytham and St Annes, near Blackpool, to watch the world’s oldest major tournament. But as Jason was standing next to the 15th fairway last Thursday afternoon, he was hit on the head by a wayward drive from the world’s number two golfer, Rory McIlroy. Rush-hour BRT protest planned: Protesters against the proposed Bus Rapid Transit system will be on Prince Street tomorrow morning to raise awareness of their campaign. Guided buses and the 18-metre long BRT bus stop situated in the centre of the road will occupy the whole of Prince St between The Grove and the bridge and other road users will be discouraged from using the eastern side of Prince St. Pip Sheard, spokesperson for StopBRT2, said: “We think people will be shocked and angry at how BRT2 will change this whole area.”

More Bristol schools close gap in reading: Fourteen more Bristol schools have achieved the Bristol Every Child a Reader standard, bringing the total number of schools to 30. The Bristol schools are Bannerman Road Primary, Millpond Primary, South Street Primary, Two Mile Hill Primary, Hareclive Primary, Parson Street Primary, Victoria Park Primary, Whitehall Primary, Cabot Primary, Glenfrome Primary, Knowle Park Primary, St Peters Primary, St Annes Infant and St Teresa’s Primary. The Every Child a Reader programme identifies children struggling to get to grips with reading and offers intensive one-to-one support to help them get back on track.
