Lib Dems tight-lipped on mayoral candidates: Bristol’s Liberal Democrats have drawn up a shortlist of potential candidates for the role of Bristol mayor – but have refused to say who is on it. The chairman of the party in the city, Andy Morgan, said that only members would be told the names of the contenders and provided with their manifestos in preparation for a hustings meeting on August 2. Only after the party’s candidate had been chosen would the name then be released to the public, he said. Remploy to close 27 factories, government confirms: Remploy, which provides employment opportunities for disabled people, is to close half its 54 factories – including one in Bristol – the government confirmed on Tuesday. Maria Miller, minister for disabled people, told MPs that the £320m budget for disabled employment services could be spent more effectively. The 27 loss-making factories are to close between August and mid-December, putting 1,421 jobs at risk. Just one carer to face trial after woman changes plea to guilty: Ten out of 11 carers charged with abusing patients at Winterbourne View secure hospital have now admitted wrongdoing, whilst the remaining one faces a trial. Yesterday Charlotte Cotterell, 22, of Melrose Avenue, Yate, changed her plea to guilty to ill-treating a woman patient. Gloucestershire sign Benny Howell on permanent deal: Gloucestershire have handed a two-year contract to Benny Howell after a trial period at the club. The 23-year-old former Hampshire batsman was brought in on a short-term deal at the start of the season as cover for the injured Dan Housego. But he has impressed during his stay, hitting two half-centuries in piling up 261 runs in five first-class matches. NUT joins march against EDL: The Bristol Branch of the National Union of Teachers (NUT) has said it will join a counter-demonstration to the EDL this Saturday. An NUT spokesman said his members were “proud” to join unions and community groups against the “message of racism, bigotry and hate being put forward by the EDL and, especially, their anti- Islamic attacks on Muslim communities”.
