Weight lifted from Bishopsworth roads: A large part of Bishopsworth will benefit from a 7.5 tonne weight-restriction forbidding Heavy Goods Vehicle from Monday. Five years ago, Bristol City Council agreed to ban large lorries from using busy King’s Head Lane and adjacent roads by designating a weight-limit along the road and in nearby streets in Bedminster Down. Cllr Richard Eddy said: “Local people are delighted that the successful current weight-restriction is to be extended from next week to include most of Bishopsworth. The successful extension of the lorry ban is a triumph for local people, but it will be due to their vigilance and support if it is to succeed.”

MP’s praise for supermarket’s waste food pledge: Bristol East MP Kerry McCarthy has welcomed a commitment by supermarket chain Waitrose to donate surplus food to charities as part of their aim to divert 100% of its food waste from landfill by the end 2012. Ms McCarthy, who in March launched the Food Waste Bill calling on supermarkets to donate unwanted food to charities and Food Banks, has praised Waitrose, describing the move as “an important first step that other retailers should follow”.

Gold for green-fingered zoo experts: Gardeners at Bristol Zoo have been awarded a gold medal at the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. The Zoo’s team of experts are displaying their collection of Caryopteris, more commonly known as ‘bluebeard’, at the biggest plant show in the world. Bristol Zoo Gardens is an official national collection holder of these plants and is showing a variety of the plants in an Oriental themed display in the Plant Heritage tent, which this year has the theme of worldwide conservation.

Harbour Festival charity chosen: The organisers of the Harbour Festival have announced that local charity Young Bristol has been chosen to benefit from this year’s event. The work of Young Bristol is focused on providing positive activities for young people aged eight to 19 which helps them to develop team-work and communications skills and increased confidence.

Shrien Dewani extradition back in court ‘this month’: Proceedings to extradite a Bristol man accused of ordering the murder of his wife on honeymoon are due to resume this month, South African prosecutors have said. Shrien Dewani, 32, denies any involvement in the killing of his wife Anni in Cape Town, in November 2010. In August, a judge sitting in London ruled that he could be extradited to South Africa to stand trial. But that decision was reversed on mental health grounds at the High Court in March. You’ll be able to shop using new Bristol Pound: The notes which will be used for Bristol’s own currency are revealed today. They can be used from Wednesday, September 19 when the Bristol Pound (£B) is officially launched. People who open an account with the Bristol Credit Union will be able to spend the money in shops and businesses which sign up to the scheme. More from The Post…

Olympic legend is granted the freedom of the city: A Kenyan Olympian who has forged a partnership with Bristol has been given the freedom of the city. Kipchoge Keino – who is better known as Kip – won his first Olympic gold medal in the 1,500m in the 1968 games in Mexico, despite suffering gallstones and being advised to stay in bed. He went on to win another Olympic gold in the 3,000m in Munich in 1972 to add to his two silver medals and a clutch of honours in the Commonwealth and All-Africa games. More from The Post…

Backing for improvements to Bearpit: A community group says that improvements to the Bearpit in Bristol’s city centre will provide major benefits for thousands of pedestrians and cyclists each day. Cabinet councillors went ahead with a £1 million scheme to provide surface-level crossings and a walkway on the rim of the sunken roundabout at St James Barton.
